do hard things!!^^

Why We Do Hard Things

The teen authors of Do Hard Things are challenging you to join their rebellion against low expectations.

In 2005, twin brothers Alex and Brett Harris started a blog that grew so popular that it led to a full website (therebelution.com), a series of conferences, and their first book, Do Hard Things (Multnomah). Ignite Your Faith talked to them about their message, politics, and how God has always used young people.

Why We Do Hard Things

What is the basic message of your book and the conferences?

Alex: Well, the core idea is what we call The Rebelution. That's combining the words rebellion and revolution for a new word we define as a teenage rebellion against low expectations. Our society expects very little of teens. They expect us to be immature, irresponsible, and rebellious. They don't expect us to do anything meaningful or to care about things that are meaningful. But that's a lie. Young people are capable. Inside, we want to be challenged. We know there's more to life, there's more to the teen years.

What uniquely Christian aspects are there to your message of Do Hard Things?

Brett: We believe the only way we can truly be faithful in doing hard things with the right motivation—a heart to serve and not to promote ourselves—is to be rooted in the gospel. We have to root it in what Jesus Christ did for us. He did the ultimate hard thing, which was to reconcile us to God through laying down his life, rising from the dead, and saving us from our sin. And that's why we get up every day. That's why we do hard things.

For you guys, doing hard things means being very active in politics and reading challenging books. But what does doing hard things mean for others?

Alex: Well, we do think young people should be reading books and being involved in politics. But doing hard things looks different for everyone. Something that's hard for us may not be hard for you and vice versa. "Do hard things" doesn't mean "do this list of things." It especially doesn't mean "do the things Alex and Brett are doing." It means do what's hard for you. It really is just a mindset change: It's trusting God enough to obey him even when it's hard.

Speaking of politics, you campaigned for presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee. What did you learn in this work?

Brett: We learned about the power of the ordinary citizen to make a huge difference by seeking God and saying, "Look, that's the guy who I think best represents my values. I'm going to work for him now." This was a case where a lot of people, many of them evangelicals, rallied behind a candidate who most people didn't think had a chance, and made him the surprise of the entire primary election, winning Iowa, showing strong on Super Tuesday and being the last candidate in the race before McCain clinched the nomination.

Now that the race is between Obama and McCain, what are your thoughts?

Brett: As Christians, our role in politics is to fight for the best candidate. That was Mike Huckabee for us, and we fought hard all the way till the end. Now, it's a Christian responsibility to switch to the next best candidate. For us, the decision comes down to core issues like sanctity of life and marriage and some of these values that as Christians we hold very dear. However, we have to recognize that our hope is not in politics but it's in God. So we're fighting for revival at the same time that we're supporting any certain candidate.

Alex: To people who say we should just not vote or stay home, we don't agree that that's right. We believe it is our obligation to vote for the best candidate available.

At Ignite, we've seen many teens like Zach Hunter doing amazing things in the world. Why is this generation the generation of the rebelution?

Brett: You can't explain young people getting outside of themselves, serving others, and accomplishing these incredible things apart from God working in their lives—whether it's grace in the life of a Christian or even common grace in the life of an unbeliever.

Second, our generation has an availability of information that's unprecedented. New technology allows them greater access to the world and provides a platform we've never had before.

Being home-schooled, do you find difference in the reaction to your message from high school attendees?

Alex: The number one response we receive from homeschool students would be, "I thought I was the only one who felt this way." They feel isolated, and this is an affirmation they're not alone in wanting to live for more. For public and private school students, maybe the reaction is more of a paradigm shift because they're a little bit more surrounded by the culture of low expectations.

Brett: The main thing I've seen is just that there's different application of the message. For instance, public schoolers are more likely to be challenged by taking a stand, going against the flow. Homeschoolers identify more with the challenge to do those things that don't pay off immediately and going above and beyond what's expected or required.

How has doing hard things specifically changed your individual faiths?

Alex: One of the neatest lessons for me has just been realizing that God still uses young people. You look at Scripture and read about King David, King Josiah, Esther, Jeremiah, Mary the mother of Jesus, all these young people who God used to change the course of history. It's been amazing to hear all the stories of ordinary young people like us who God is using to impact thousands and thousands of lives. That is a very faith-deepening thing.

Brett: I was just reading the other day in the Bible about when Christ called the apostles. He said, "I'm going to make you fishers of men." These were fishermen. These were not well-qualified people. The only thing that qualified them was the willingness to leave everything and follow Christ. And so my greatest lesson has just been that I have done nothing to deserve or earn the things that God has done in my life and through my life. The only qualification I had, which is also by his grace, is that I was willing to say, "I'm going to do hard things for you. I'm going to leave everything. I'm going to obey you when it's hard."

Rebelutionaries

Two teen brothers are launching a rebellion—against low expectations.
by Elisabeth Freeman

Rebelutionaries

The Launching Pad: In 2005, twin brothers Alex and Brett Harris, 19, started a blog. They called it The Rebelution because they wanted to ignite a teenage rebellion against low expectations. They wanted to encourage their Christian peers to think hard and not waste their gifts. "Our culture wants us to view the teen years as a vacation from responsibility." Alex says. "But we think they are supposed to be the launching pad of life. Teens today are capable of so much more than they think they are."

Feelings into Words: The call was quickly heard. With hard-hitting articles on topics like abortion, modesty and achieving big things right now, the web traffic exploded. The response surprised Brett and Alex. "Even by the end of the first week, we had fellow teens leaving comments saying that we were putting what they were feeling into words," Brett says. "They were wanting more, and they were asking us a ton of questions."

The brothers kept writing, sometimes posting two or three times a day. They wrote a series of entries on the three pillars of their Rebelution: character, competence and collaboration. They established a battle cry for their growing movement: "Do Hard Things."

The Growing Rebelution: When their blog began to get hundreds of hits daily, they decided to launch their own site (therebelution.com). Three weeks before the new site's launch, they were featured in the New York Daily News. "We were blown away," says Alex. "We realized we'd touched a nerve. It wasn't something we planned. We're just honored to be part of what God was doing in the hearts of our generation."

And then God opened a whole new door: Rebelution conferences—events focused on worshiping God and showing that God can do anything if believers are willing to step outside their comfort zones and "do hard things" for him. The first conference was held in Sacramento just six months after the new site launch. "It was really a God thing," Brett explains. "After just three weeks of word-of-mouth publicity, we were sold out." The building seated 450, but they packed in 500. Last fall, they held a conference in Indianapolis with over 2,000 attendees from 20 states. Some groups drove as far as 16 hours.

More conferences are coming this summer. In addition, in April the twins will release their first book, Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations (Multnomah). "Another God thing," Brett says. "We're really excited about it."

Alex and Brett don't know exactly what their future holds. But they do know that they'll continue doing hard things—and leading their generation to do the same.
